Sometimes we wish we could go back and take video of moments missed – like when we were setting up for our very first appearance at Richland Park Farmer’s market, nearly two years ago. We were extremely blessed to have been placed right next to two of the most chill guys there ( @WhiskCheesecakeShop ) …which, in other words, is to say…a video would have likely shown us to look like Lucy and Ethel setting up for their first big gig right next door to Sinatra, crooning. Long before we were all put together, these two guys were already sitting back in director chairs, smiling and sporting very good cheer for a chilly December morning, with nothing to do but wait for their pre-order clients to appear. Clearly, these guys were professionals!
As the market opened, we eagerly embraced the opportunity to share our products and, from time to time, chat with our new neighbors. And, while we expected to make some friends along the way, we didn’t expect discovering what we call our “secret mentors” so early in the process.
We ladies love to learn from others. But, more than anything, we love to learn from those who are so obviously good to the bone. On that first day, Elvin shared some helpful ideas on behalf of our future success. We took those very much to heart, as they were smart ideas and we were nowhere near having considered such things. All we came away with was the sense that these guys clearly knew their stuff and were generous about sharing with no other desire than to genuinely be helpful! And, while they never knew it, they quickly became some of our very first “secret mentors” among the vendors at Richland Park Farmer’s Market. And, ever since that first day, they have remained an ongoing source of inspiration, holding a special place in our hearts.
For us, “secret mentors” show up in people from all walks of life and in a great variety of life moments. Sometimes it’s a single teaching moment that leaves us feeling unexpectedly grateful. Other times it’s more of a relationship that develops, where there comes an evolving exchange of ideas that, more often than not, leaves us feeling like we are the luckiest gals at the market. In the case of our friends at Whisk, we cherish their unique brand of positive support and genuine goodness that shows up at every opportunity. It’s why we were both absolutely delighted and utterly not at all surprised to see such a beautiful, heartfelt story appear on their Instagram one morning, in reference to a bag of our Jerusalem Challah Bagels we casually shared with them one day. To see the beautiful photo – to know the time it had to take for Elvin to create such an appealing image – just to share a kind word on our behalf – well, let’s just say, you can’t help but see for yourselves why they deserve to remain “secret mentors” in our eyes.
We are pretty sure that our clients all know about their company so this isn’t likely to give them any great new surge of followers. However, this is an opportunity for We Lil’ Birds at Little Bird Bakery and Apothecary to sing their praises and say thank you, out loud, before GD and everybody. Here’s to two chill guys with the warmest hearts around – thanks for taking time to throw light our way!!
